  • Dental Hygiene and Periodontal Health

When you are concerned about dental hygiene, it is important to recognize the steps you can take to keep your teeth and gums healthy. You do not want to face gum disease, which is also known as periodontitis, especially when it is a preventable problem.

    Basic Cleanliness

Brush your teeth at least twice per day and floss at least once. This basic guideline is the foundation for good cleanliness and oral hygiene. Your teeth and gums need the food particles removed from the surface to reduce or prevent bacterial build up that wears away at the enamel of your teeth.

The University of Rochester Medical Center suggests brushing every morning and before bed every day with a soft-bristle brush. If you are able to brush your teeth in the middle of the day, such as after lunch, then you should also brush your teeth at that time.

    Keeping Your Gums Healthy

Although you want to take measures to protect your teeth from cavities, you also need to focus on the health of your gums. Good oral hygiene is only one factor that you need to consider when it comes to preventing the development of gum disease.

Brush your teeth gently. When you brush your teeth too hard, it can cause your gums to bleed. Due to the small cut, that can mean that your gums have the opportunity to become inflamed or infected. By using a gentle stroke with a soft-bristle brush, you will reduce the risk of cutting your gums and facing those problems.

Healthy gums and teeth require proper cleaning and management. Even if you have a busy schedule and limited time, you should set aside a few minutes to brush your teeth in the morning and before bed. It will go a long way in protecting your smile.
